Fall Craft Idea

I think this fall craft is such a great idea! As I was walking outside the other day, I noticed all the different colours of leaves that were falling on the ground and I began thinking to myself about what I could do with them. I ended up coming home with about a dozen leaves stuffed in my pockets of all shapes and sizes with the urge to make some sort of nice craft using them. As I looked on the internet I stumbled on this neat idea and decided I would give it a try. It is actually a quite simple and quick craft to make and looks great with a candle inside. Here is the site I used to help me.

Capturing Events- Ultimate Game

This weekend there was an Ultimate tournament at Assiniboine Park where our schools teams, Huskies and Havoc were playing. I had never watched an Ultimate game and quickly realized how hard it was when I pulled out my camera to take some shots... The players were just so quick on their feet! I would have the perfect shot set up and before you knew it, they would already be across the field or jumping in the air. It was a little more difficult to take pictures, but I managed to increase my shutter speed to get in on more of the action. I also brought my video camera and captured quite a bit of footage. I'm still not too sure on how Ultimate works, but I was very impressed with the determination and skill the teams displayed.

Capturing Events- Final Football Game

Last Thursday, I went to the final home football game at our school. During the game, I took many videos and pictures to capture the teams incredible effort and spirit. Even though it was fairly cold outside, there were many people in the crowd cheering, and their enthusiasm was reflected in the teams playing. The Huskies played very well, winning the game with an outstanding score of 39 to 13. It was quite the exciting game and a great win. Great job Huskies!

Quick write #2 -The Road of Life

I believe this saying is true. It is important in life to not judge anyone before you actually know them. This picture relates to the saying "Don't judge a book by it's cover". You really don't know a person until you have truly had the time to understand them. As a society, we need to realize that everyone has been through many different experiences and challenges in their lives and in a way we are all similar.

Like most people, I am afraid of many things in life. Lately, like many of my classmates, I am afraid of the future. It is my last year in high school and although I am very excited to graduate, I am also very scared. I know I'll be able to succeed in my future because I am very self motivated, but I'm afraid for the next big steps in my life.

Love... Well at a certain point in everyones life, we all feel love. From relationships to friends, to the ones who have raised us since day one. Love is all around us everyday. Sometimes we feel like the world is against us and we will never find love, but it's important to remember love is with you every step of the way. Not only do I love the people that surround me, but I love the amazing opportunities I am grateful to experience on a daily basis.

Losing anything in life is hard, but it is a challenge we all go through. I have lost many things, from loved ones, friends and pets. At first losing something and especially someone can be very difficult to overcome. When the time is right, we learn to grow and accept. My parents divorced when I was five years old. Although it was a very difficult time and I felt like I was losing the most stable thing in my life, I have grown to accept my two separate families. A loss in life can be hard, but sometimes it's the hardships that help us grow the most.

Quick write #1 -Robot

If I had a personalized robot servent, my robot would be very obedient but not too clingy. I like my space therefore he would be there to help me with things around the house, like cleaning and helping me with all homework and studying. He would always be willing to lend a helping hand and would be a great chef, always making the best food. I would treat my robot nicely and give him his own room to stay. My robot would look like Ryan Gosling and have the voice of Morgan Freeman. In my opinion, that's the best of both worlds!

Favourite Show- Breaking Bad

These past few months I have become obsessed with the show Breaking Bad. My boyfriend and I decided we wanted to start watching a show together that we would both end up liking and since many people were talking about this show, we thought we would give it a try. Currently we are on the fourth season and it's difficult to stop watching!

The story begins with a talented chemistry teacher named Walter White who is unfortunately diagnosed with stage-three lung cancer. The thought of leaving his family without much money saddens him and seeing how treatment is quite expensive, Walter introduces himself to some illegal business to help with the money situation.

Walter teams up with a former student named Jesse Pinkman while they take on a variety of heart wrenching drama as they produce and distribute some of the purest methamphetamine. It's quite difficult to predict what I think will happen next because each episode so far is quite unexpected.

These series are extremely thrilling, leading to more and more suspense and action in each episode. It really is incredible to see just how far people will go for money!

Pumpkin Brownies

In the spirit of fall, this weekend I decided to make use of the canned pumpkin in the cupboard. Since pumpkin is a fall trend, I knew I would be able to find a recipe online that I would love. I managed to stumble on a recipe for Pumpkin Brownies and well, how couldn't I make them? I ended up using a little more pumpkin then called for because I love the flavour and some more flour to compensate for the added moisture. My brownies turned out fantastic and were a big hit in the house. Pumpkin and chocolate brownies mixed into one? The best of both worlds! To make them even better, I made chocolate icing to put on top. I will definitely be making some more before winter rolls around.

Global Issues Take Action Project

Last year I was in Global Issues at school and we had to take part in a project where we could help a world issue not only locally, but internationally. A couple friends and I decided to work with fair trade items after hearing about the horrible building collapse in Bangladesh. We made a video to raise awareness on sweatshops and unfair labour as well as having a booth at lunch selling fair trade items. We were lucky enough to work with MCIC to promote the benefits of shopping fair trade. They gave us fair trade clothing and food items to promote and sell for a week at school and amazingly we raised over $400.00 to donate to an organization of our choice.  Check out our site!

Six Word Memoir Debrief

What did I learn about storytelling?

I learned that it doesn't take much to tell a story. Stories don't have to be several paragraphs in length explaining every little detail, they can be as simple as a single picture. For our six word memoirs, we learned how to tell a story with six words and a picture. It was a little difficult to take a story and turn it into only six words, but it was also interesting to see that you can tell a story without explaining every little detail. The picture helps lead the reader in the right direction, but only having six words, a lot of the story is left for the reader to figure out.

Where did I show my knowledge about using storytelling skills?

I showed my knowledge of storytelling skills by using the appropriate punctuation to convey my feelings for each specific memoir. My choice of wording shows my knowledge for storytelling skills because I could only use six words to tell a story. I had to narrow my words down or try and fit more words in that would still make sense while portraying my exact thoughts to the image and memory. It was also important to use the correct fonts, colours, filters and effects to carry my emotion through the image. I tried to show this in each memoir, for example in my memoir on Christmas with the wording "Most wonderful time of the year", I used an effect to make the image look older. By making the image look older, it helped show that the image was from the past. I kept the colours and the script writing to still give the image life and convey the happy feeling. All of these little steps helped in telling a story.

What did I learn as a reader, writer, thinker, and/or storyteller?

After reading all of my classmates six word memoirs, I learned to be more open minded. Not being behind the choice of picture and words, I learned that it was left up to me as a reader to make up what I thought their stories were with the information and visuals they gave me. I also learned that six words can actually say a lot about an image and memory which was very intriguing to me. As a writer I learned that I could narrow down all of my emotions and descriptions simply into six words. A lot of the time I am used to giving out every little detail to a story and continuing to expand on my thoughts but for this assignment, I had to focus on choosing my words wisely. As a thinker I learned how to think in six words yet still be able to tell people a story. At first it was hard but with a little practice, each memoir became easier.
